Indicating locations　あります (Refer  to the DBJG Aru1 pp.73 – 76 for more sample sentences.)

ありますmeans ”the state of being in existence/ to be situated in a certain location/ to be in someone’s possession.  がparticle is used to indicate what is being existed, located, owned. However, はparticle often replace が  to indicate “topics at the beginning of a sentence”, “comparing/contrasting” with the usage with でも、が、しかし (but/ however) , etc.

 

Topicがあります。 Topicはplaceにあります。

車(くるま)があります。　There is a car.  (I) have a car.
Note: Another commonly used word to mean “have, possess, own” is もっています。Please remember this word also.  We will study this grammar later.  車をもっています。Remember that  をparticle should be used with もっています。

車(くるま)はありますが、自転車(じてんしゃ)はありません。There is a car but there is not a bike. (I) have a car but do not have a bike.

関東地方(かんとうちほう)は本州にあります。　Kanto area is located in Honshu Island.

東京(とうきょう)は関東地方(かんとうちほう)にあります。　Tokyo is located in Kanto area.

Practice I. Use the map below to memorize the names of islands and regions.  Also, try to locate the major cities and in which prefectures they are and on the map below.

Assignment 1-1A: After studying where islands, areas, cities locate on Japanese map, using the web sites: Look at 　 the left column of the website: http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1003.htmlor go to http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1004.html , write in Japanese where the following cities  located (area and prefecture) and match up the city with the simple description written in the box below) and create a sentence which describes the city. Look at the sample.
E.g. 神戸 (こうべ): 神戸(こうべ)は兵庫県(ひょうごけん)にあります。　その県(けん)は関西地方(かんさいちほう)にあります。(A)神戸(こうべ)はコスモポリタンな町です。
