Commuting and transportation

The public transportation system in Japan is well established and convenient to use especially in urban area.  Japanese commute to school and work by public bus, subway, train, etc.  The average commuting time for Japanese workers nowadays is one and half hours.  I (Kano-sensee) traveled 2 and half hour each way (total about 4and half to 5 hours a day) to get to a university from Kobe to Osaka.  I enjoyed looking at scenery (beautiful Awaji island and Setonai Sea can be viewed on the way from the train), doing homework, talking with friends, listening to music, and mostly sleeping on trains.   But I always woke up before the station, which I have to get off.  This is one of the skill you will acquire in living in Japan.

 

 

Place から Place　まで transportation で hours/minutesぐらいかかります。

ぐらいis often used to mean “about.”  Also it is used to make the statement sound polite.  Please remember the differences with  ごろ. (Refer to the note below.)

東京(とうきょう)から静岡(しずおか)まで新幹線(しんかんせん)で１時間半(じかんはん)ぐらいかかります。　近いです。 From Tokyo to Shizuoka, it takes about an hour and half.  It is close.

ぐらい vs. ごろ
(Refer to DBJG Goro pp.126 – 128 for more sample sentences.)

ぐらい is used with amount of time, number, length, size, etc.

ごろis used with certain time of the day or certain date in the calendar.

 

３つぐらいください。Give me about three items.  (The speaker often wants exactly three items. ぐらい is used to soften the sound of the speaker’s desire to have three.)

お昼(ひる)ごろ、会(あ)いませんか？ Shall we（Why don’t） we meet around noon?

今日(きょう)、５時(じ)ごろアルバイトへ行(い)きます。I will go to my part time job at 5:00.

７月(がつ)２５日(にち)ごろに帰(かえ)ります。I will return around July 25th.
