Situation 1 (Sample answers)

Listen to the dialogs and fill in the map/layout of a town and indicates what they are.  Also answer the following questions.

1)Describe the neighborhood of the Hayashi’s apartment.

2)How many coffee shops are there in Hayashi’s neighborhood?  Where are they?

3)Which coffee shop does Hayashi likes best and why (dooshite desu ka)?

4)How long does it take from Hayashi’s apartment to the university?

5)Where does he eat lunch often and why (dooshite desu ka)??

6)What does he do on weekends?

1)Hayashi (the female speaker) says the neighborhood is in a very nice place. It is in a lively place (nigiyaka na tokoro) since there is a department parking lot in front of the apartment and pachinko parlor in the back.  However, a park and a temple on the side of the apartment (across from the road) provide a quiet (peaceful) place (shizuka na tokoro).  Also, it is convenient (benri) and safe (anzen) since there is a subway and JR train stations in the department store, and police box locates next to the department store.

2)There are three. One locates next to the diner, which is next to the university, one in the inside of the shrine, and another in the outside of the shrine.

3)He likes the coffee shop next to the shrine best since the waitress is cute. Coffee there is so so (average).

4)It takes 10 minutes on foot.   By bicycle, it is 3 minutes.

5)He eats every day at the diner next to the university.  The diner at the university is close to the classroom buildings (kurasu no biru) but the food there is not delicious, (it is cheap, though). The food at the diner (outside campus) is inexpensive and delicious.  He especially likes “Soba Teishoku (set menu with Soba)” there.   (Set menu usually comes with miso soup, rice and vegetable pickles or some vegetable side dish. Since this set contains soba, it will not likely to have rice with it since soba, the buckwheat noodle, already provides carbohydrate.)

6)He works (part time job) every Saturdays at the movie theater. He sometimes go to the church in front of the movie theater to attend an English class and practice English with a British teacher.

Other items/findings from the conversation:
