First offered in the Spring of 2005, this seminar includes a variety of music-making activities such as playing the soprano recorder, xylophones and other percussion instruments, and singing. For more information about honors course at UNCW, visit the Honors Scholars Program web site.
In “Music, Mallets, and More,” students engage in the creative process of making music while building upon and developing basic musical concepts. This interactive and participatory course is designed for students with some musical background who are interested in participating in making music. Pre-requisites for this enrichment seminar are MUS 105, 106, 111, or the ability to read and write music.
In this hands-on seminar, students primarily engage in playing simple classroom instruments (i.e. xylophones, recorders, and drums). Other activities include listening to music, movement, and singing. In addition, students improvise and compose their own music within the confines of this classroom ensemble. Through critical and creative thinking in a musical context, the course objectives include developing a basis for lifelong valuing of musical experiences, making music collaboratively, and enjoying music as a source of self-expression and growth.
