COURSE DESCRIPTION
Spanish 201 is the first part of the two-course sequence of intermediate Spanish offered at UNCW. The course practices, reviews, and amplifies the grammar and communicative skills acquired in previous Spanish courses. This section of 201 augments the grammatical and cultural material presented in the texts with considerable class time devoted to video segments and informal oral communication in Spanish. After a brief review of past and imperfect tenses, Spanish 201 will focus on chapters 10 to 15 of the textbook series Mosaicos. Prerequisites for the course include having passed 102, 120 or having placed into the course via the placement exam.
Our instructional goal is
to continue to develop the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills you
used in Introductory Spanish or in other high school or college courses. By the
end of the semester you should be able to survive in a Spanish-speaking
environment. Thus, we will review and expand vocabulary, as well as the basic
tenets of Spanish grammar and syntax. By the end of the semester you should
also be able to carry on short conversations and to describe objects and
situations orally and in writing. Additionally, you should demonstrate the
ability to read selections from newspapers, magazines, literary works, etc.
Finally, you will have the ability to recognize and appreciate aspects of
Hispanic culture and to compare and contrast cultures.
PARTICIPATION.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION ARE NECESSARY IN
ORDER TO ACHIVE THE GOAL OF THIS COURSE. You should prepare the lesson on
the syllabus BEFORE the class meeting. Most vocabulary and grammar study will
be completed outside of class in order to use class time more efficiently
for communicative practice. The classroom is the place for practice and putting
what you learned at home into action. If you know you are going to miss class,
get the assignment for the next class period from a classmate and study ahead.
Remember that a great chunk of your grade will be determined on the basis
of your listening comprehension and speaking ability in class. To make sure
that you do great in class, attend class regularly, participate everyday,
prepare your classes, go to the language lab and complete your homework.
In this class you will be allowed 3 ABSENCES during the term for whatever reason (doctor’s appointment, family emergencies, job interviews, athletic events, etc.). Each absence over 3 will result in the lowering of your final grade by 5 points [the common policy for our entire Spanish section]. ANY STUDENT MISSING 10 OR MORE CLASSES IN THE MWF CLASS OR 7 IN THE MW CLASS FOR WHATEVER REASONS AUTOMATICALLY FAILS THE COURSE.
