Notices:Welcome!Happy New Year!!!!!!! I hope you had a fun, but safe, New Year break. In ten days we will be starting the Spring Semester - You are currently registered at this time for PHY 495. The course website is at https://people.uncw.edu/hermanr/phy495/. There you will find the syllabus, tentative schedule, and other useful information. In this course you will investigate a physics or physical oceanography topic in depth, write a paper, give a presentation, and defend a poster on your research an open forum on Reading Day. During the course you will learn how to write a report and prepare a presentation using LaTeX. You will do this under the guidance of the PHY 495 instructor (me) and at most one other topic advisor from the department (which could be me as well). Further expectations, assignments, and useful materials are found at the website and will be discussed as we proceed. Note: Your research topic will not be earth-shattering fundamental research. This is not an honors project or a thesis. You will explore a topic in depth beyond a typical course project. You can take a subject you wanted to expand upon and research it over the course of the semester. It needs to demonstrate that you have learned some physics and can apply it. Projects can be theoretical, computational, or experimental. But you need to provide the necessary background and depth. You will know what that is by the end of the semester. I have links to some old projects on the Links page. Also, you can see a list of topics I've advised in math and physics here or on my Student's page. As a first assignment, you can email me and let me know something about yourself, what areas of interest you have that might help us find your research topic, or anything you might have on your mind as the new year begins. Until then, your last week as you move into this Spring semester. |
