You should be able to leave messages on my phones 910-458-5137 or 910-962-3722. In the event of evacuation, I will not be at my home phone, as I would have to leave the island.

Aug 9 - First Email Sent to Class

It is important that you come to all classes. If you are having problems, feel free to stop by my office and talk to me. I would not like to see you do poorly because you are not coming to class. Things will get a little tougher as the semester progresses, so you need to start off on a good foot and keep up with the work. Attendance is crucial to your success!

Welcome to MAT 111! I hope you are eager to get started because we will
hit the ground running. If you would like to know more about the course, or your instructor, feel free to check out the course web site http://people.uncw.edu/hermanr/mat111

The first homework assignment will be to email me at hermanr@uncw.edu . Let me know what you think of the class, what you prefer me to call you, your concerns, etc. Feel free to email any time. I will try to get back to you in a reasonable time. My virtual door is always open.

You will need a graphing calculator (TI-83) in this class. If you practice using it while doing your homework, there will be no surprises when you have to use it on an exam.

If you are anxious, get a copy of the book and start reading the first
chapter. If you are really ambitious, you can start working on
problems. I have information up at the course website. You can find all of the information you need there. A copy of this email and other useful
information is posted at the notices page of the website.

I hope you had a restful summer and are ready for a new year at UNCW. I will see you bright and early on Wednesday, August 18th at 8:00 AM!

Aug 27 - Mixture Problem

I hope you have a good weekend. I thought I would write up the problem I was highlighting at the end of class. More problems can be found at the Purplemath link on the materials page. I also put a link to this problem, http://people.uncw.edu/hermanr/mat111/Mixture.htm I worked out the problem and drew a picture as well. I hope these links help as you do the word problems.

In the meantime, there is information at the top of the notices page about the hurricane policy. You will find other information at the UNCW site. You can follow hurricane Frances at http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/ As of now there are only predictions up to Wednesday.

Do not forget, your homework is due Monday. Those who owe homework,  please get it in. There is a late penalty, but that is better than a zero.
