The purpose of the examination is to evaluate how you apply your
personal family nursing knowedge base.
Grading will focus on how well you describe situations,
apply concepts, and explain your rationale for
making choices.
Part I. Associating concepts with family situations.
- Select
- a MOVIE, SHORT STORY, PLAY, or other medium of your choice which
depicts family life, or a family life situation.
or
- a family situation about which you have a working knowledge
base OTHER THAN a family you followed
for the NSGL 389 clinical course.
- Briefly summarize the family situation you have chosen. Provide
enough information so that a reader not familiar with the situation
can grasp what was happening (or your perception of what
was happening). [5 points].
- Analyze the family situation by:
- explaining the structure of the family (e.g., nuclear, traditional,
post-modern) and your rationale for applying that structural label to
the family. [3 points].
- describing what you believe was occurring in the family situation
using at least TWO of the family realms identified by Anderson
&Tomlinson (1992) .
The family realms are:
- Family Health,
- Family Interaction,
- Developmental Transitions,
- Family Integrity, and
- Family Coping.
The
purpose of this exercise is to test your ability to apply a conceptual
framework in explaining family phenomena you observed. [7 points].
- Forecast what you anticipate might occur if you were working as a
family nurse with the family situation you chose above. [10 points].
Questions you could consider as you develop your discussion about
working with the family might include:
- How might you begin interacting with the family?
- How might you involve the family in identifying family issues?
- What issues or problems might you and/or the family identify? What is your rationale for focusing on those issues/problems ?
- What are some ways to address those issues/problems? What is
your rationale for those approaches?
- What skills do you have for working with the situation?
- What referral resources, if any, might you choose to use?
What is your rationale for deciding to use, or not to use, referral
resources?
- How might family relationships influence outcomes from what you
do, or attempt to do?
Part II. Short Discussion.
Please choose and discuss briefly one ONE of the following statements;
specify your rationale. [5 points].
