Introduction to the Reading Module for EDN 503, 504, 5050, and 506

Welcome to the Reading Module.
This intro is to show you how the course is laid out, to point you to key concepts and features, and to tell you how to complete the culminating assessment and get credit for your work.

Layout of Materials.
The materials for this course are in numbered Modules (the icons for the modules are backpacks). The first is Module 1; the last is Module 4. Begin by reading the materials for Module 1. You will find the materials to be read under the heading: Notes.
Unlike a regular class, there are no tests or assignments for the modules. However, you are required to read the materials thoroughly and to follow the links that are available to you.

Key Concepts.
The field of reading is too vast to present in depth in these modules. Instead, you will be given an overview of reading research and several practical applications that you can use in your own classroom. The concepts in the modules are:

  • No Child Left Behind and Reading First
  • Scientifically-proven pedagogy
  • The five key skills of early reading
  • Pre-reading and Prior Knowledge Strategies
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension: Principles and Integrated Approaches

Culminating Assessment.
The only graded part of these modules is the Culminating Assessment. In it, you will be required to write a Reading lesson plan, using a basketball, a baseball, and a soccer ball as inductive devices. Once you've finished the lesson plan, email it to me at gilld@uncw.edu. I will grade it and give you feedback. Once you have satisfactorily completed the assessment, I will notify your instructor.
