The
Internet Classics Archive
This is a searchable site where you
can “select from a list of 441 works of classical literature by 59 different
authors, including user-driven commentary and "reader's choice"
Web sites. Mainly
Greco-Roman works (some Chinese and Persian), all in English translation.”
Can be useful for finding references to Heracles in primary source texts.

(Herakles
1)
Herakles 1 is a small part of The
Greek Mythology Link, which is a wider “collection of the Greek myths
being written and published on line by Carlos Parada. The Greek Mythology Link
contains texts, images, tables and maps. The mythical accounts are based
exclusively on classical sources.” The
Heracles biography is effectively organized to scan for information and then
find details. This part of the site
has a great collection of both ancient and modern art concerning Heracles. Through this site you can link to biographies of other
characters in the myths found here. (AH)
Perseus
“The Perseus Project is
an evolving digital library of resources for the study of the ancient world and
beyond. Collaborators initially formed the project to construct a large,
heterogeneous collection of materials, textual and visual, on the Archaic and
Classical Greek world.” This site
has a wide variety of primary sources which include all types of literature
along with art and archeology. This
can initially be somewhat overwhelming due to the over abundance of information.
Through this site you have access to images of art along with
descriptions of the art and links to museums that contain the art to allow
further research. The texts are
loaded with hyperlinks, which provide a wide spectrum of background info that
aides research on different topics. Some
of us found the hyperlinks initially disconcerting since some can lead to non
specific fields of research. This
site deserves a lot of credit for being the pioneer in electronic Classics
resources and it remains the key site for a lot of other Internet resources on
Heracles.
In addition to its researching capabilities, it has an excellent summary of the Herakles story for general readers. (AH)

Bulfinch’s
Mythology: The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes
The web site Bulfinch’s mythology chapter 19, “Hercules,”
describes the common myth of Herakles. It
is told in Roman terms using Roman names for the characters.
In the story, Herakles’ father is Jupiter (Zeus) and his birth mother
is Alcmena, Juno (Hera) being Zeus’s wife.
The chapter tells of Herakles’ birth and younger years.
The chapter continues through his life, going through the labors and
other later adventures. It gives a good basic general summary of Herakles’ life.
The web site has many links to primary sources and can be very helpful to find
the basis of the myths. (BD)
