Discussion Questions

What are the sources from which we get Norse Myths? Does the form of the Prose Edda (for example) affect the accuracy of the stories it preserves? If so how?

What are the characteristics of the Vanir as opposed to the Aesir? What are some reasons the Aesir have so many more stories about them in Norse myth than the Vanir do? How does the idea of fertility and agricultural productivity fit in with the powers of the gods and goddesses in Norse myth?

What are the central charateristics of Odin? What is his role in relation to the rest of the gods? How would you characterize his relationships with human beings?

Thor is often described as a "god of the common people." Do you agree? What makes him so (if he is)? Whata re Thor’s outstanding characteristics? He seems to be more constantly in conflict with the giants than the other gods – why?

Who are the giants and what is their relationship to the gods? Are they similar to the giants in Greek mythology?

Loki is described as a trickster. How does he compare to other trickster figures we have studied? How do you interpret his "liminal" role between giants and gods?
