Chapter 7
Discussion Questions
- Do you find significance differences in how Aphrodite is portrayed in different sources
(for example, Homer's Iliad, the Homeric Hymn, Sappho, Plato). Also -- how
do the stories told about her in myth (here and in other chapters) match up with the
feelings expressed about her in other sources (e.g. Sappho and Plato)?
- What are the different natures of Eros discussed in Plato's symposium? Clearly the
different speakers are using myth as metaphor to get different points across -- comment on
this process.
- What is the relationship of Aphrodite and her human lovers in myth -- how do they
react/benefit/suffer from being the lover of a goddess?
- Eros and Aphrodite are both deities of love -- what is the difference between their
realms and powers (if any)?
