Discussion Questions

In Euripides' Bacchae, Dionysus is portrayed as being particularly attractive to women.   What is it about him, or about the way he is worshipped, that makes him so?   What sort of relationship does he have with his female followers?

In the Bacchae, do you get the sense that Pentheus is evil?  Is he just misguided?   Is he neither evil nor misguided but a good man facing an impossible situation?   Does hubris enter into it?

How is Dionysus different from other gods we have studied so far?

What are the etiological elements in the story of Narcissus?  What other themes and ideas are important in this story?
