Heracles Literacy(Or,
what you need to know about Heracles, his times, terms, etc.) These
are some of the things I consider basic “literacy” about Heracles –
I will be adding to them as the semester goes along.
I am not planning quizzes or anything like that to enforce this
knowledge, but in the interests of maintaining a working community and
being credible as resource authors, I am trusting you to make sure you
learn this stuff. I.
Heracles' life story: q
names of
his mortal and immortal parents; names of his immediate mortal family,
relationship between him and Eurystheus; names of his wives; etc. q
highlights
of Heracles’ adventures; be able to name all of his Labors; be
familiarizing yourself with his “biography” so that you can recognize
allusions to his various deeds. A
good place to start is Parada’s
biographical sketch; also (though more simplified) there’s the Perseus
Heracles site. II.
Primary Sources:
Now that you have a list
of the primary sources concerning Heracles, learn who they are.
Learn the information in the brief sketches I’ve provided; this
information is vital to figuring out the different perspectives on
Heracles. More
to come as the semester unfolds.
