Readings and links for Thursday, 9/21/00:

Reading:

  • We will continue with The Madness of Heracles, looking in specific for versions of the labors, and also for the ways in which Heracles is portrayed as a person and as an image of the hero.

  • We will also look at Alcestis (downloadable from the MIT Classics page, or available at the library, we don't all have to have the same versions). (Note: as of Tuesday, the server is down for this page, so try the library if it's not up soon.  How humiliating for the tech wizards at MIT! :-) )

Writing:

  • Melissa is going to bring us some insights into Joseph Campbell's Hero with 1000 Faces (with backup from Brian and Billy), and we will sculpt this into a sample annotation of a secondary source.

  • Everybody else will be looking into secondary sources for their own annotations, and bring something in if you would like to work on it.

  • Heather and Alecia will meet with me Wednesday and we will bring in a draft of the Hesiod segment of our web page to class on Thursday.

  • Jack will also have some information on the children of Echidna and Heracles as a force against chaos.

Does anyone want to find the source of that story of Heracles killing the giants as the gods wounded them?

We will meet in Westside Hall.
