Assignment for 9/14/00 We will be actually putting together something for our web page next class. We may need to revise or add to it later, and there will be things we can't completely get down, but we will be aiming for a document that is almost publishable. It will concern what we learn about Heracles from Homer and Hesiod. If you were in class, you know which group you're in. If you weren't, choose one. Homer people will find all references to Heracles in Homer, read the full text, try to place the events referred to in the stories we know from other sources, and come up with conclusions about how Heracles is depicted in Homer. I recommend consulting T. J. Luce, Ancient Writers (library reference section) as well. Hesiod people will read the Shield of Heracles and also any fragments about Hesiod they can find in other works ascribed to Hesiod, full text to the extent possible, and come up with conclusions about how Heracles is portrayed in Hesiod. I recommend consulting T. J. Luce, Ancient Writers (library reference section) for y'all, too. Also: Parada, The Myths of Heracles is in at Seahawk Book and Supply in University Landing. Get it, read it, bring it with you to class for next time. We will talk about it and begin using it for its notes and references. |
