SPRING BREAK TRIP
GER 294: Berlin Seminar, March 5 - 14, 2004
UNCW, in conjunction with UNC-Asheville, is offering a one credit-hour mini-course on Contemporary Berlin. While the course is designed for students of GER 495: Contemporary Berlin, the course is open to all students with knowledge of German (300-400 level) Estimated cost is $ 850 including airfare, lectures, travel, and accommodations. Join students of German from UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, UNC-Greensboro, and UNCW on an exciting and informative week in the capital of Germany.
Friday, March 5: Departure from the U.S. to Berlin.
Saturday, March 6: Arrival in Berlin. Transfer to lodging site.
Welcome Dinner in the evening, with presentation/overview of the week's program by on-site coordinator Dr. Dirk Verheyen
Sunday, March 7: 10 a.m.: meet at Garystrasse 45 (Free University Berlin). Presentation about history and memory in Berlin by Dr. Verheyen, followed by lunch break.
Afternoon: Guided walking tour of the historic center of Berlin, until end of afternoon.
Monday, March 8: 10:00 a.m.: meet on the downstairs platform of S-Bahn station Anhalter Bahnhof (S1/S2/S25).
Visit to the Topography of Terror, site of the former headquarters of the SS, SD, and Gestapo (no admission charge)
Lunch break.
1:00 p.m.: meet on the downstairs platform of S-Bahn station Anhalter Bahnhof (S1/S2/S25). Travel by S-Bahn and bus to
the Wannsee Villa Memorial Site. Presentation by Dr. Verheyen about the Nazi legacy in Berlin (and Germany), starting at 2:30 p.m., followed by a guided tour in English at 4:00 p.m.). Admission is free, but guided tour involves a small fee.
Tuesday, March 9: 9:30 a.m.: meet on the downstairs platform of S-Bahn station Anhalter Bahnhof (S1/S2/S25).
Brief visit to the Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus.
Continue on foot to the Reichstag building. Visit to plenary chamber of the Bundestag and to the roof of the building beginning at 11:00 a.m. (admission is free). Walk by the Chancellor's Office and several other new government buildings.
Lunch break.
2:00 p.m.: return to the Garystrasse 45. Presentation by Dr. Verheyen about Berlin as past and current German capital city.
Wednesday, March 10: 9 a.m.: gather at station Oskar-Helene-Heim on U-Bahn line 1 (green line)
Visit to Allied Museum (no admission charge), preceded by presentation there about Cold War Berlin and the GDR legacy by Dr. Verheyen.
12:30 p.m.: lunch at university cafeteria.
1:30 p.m.: leave for Stasi Museum/Memorial Site at Normannenstrasse in eastern Berlin. Guided tour there at 3:00 p.m. Admission is circa 3 Euro per person (incl. guided tour).
Thursday, March 11: 10 a.m.: meet at Garystrasse 45. Presentation about the Berlin Wall by Dr. Verheyen, followed by lunch break.
Afternoon: Guided tour of sites related to the Berlin Wall, ending at the Checkpoint-Charlie Museum (admission is circa 5 Euro per person)
Friday, March 12: 10 a.m.: gather at Garystrasse 45. Presentation by Dr. Verheyen on current challenges facing the reunified Berlin.
Distribution of hand-outs for off-site afternoon projects.
12:30 p.m.: lunch at university cafeteria.
Afternoon: pairs of students will be given assigned walks from the book "Berlin: Open City."
Saturday, March 13: Morning: free
Afternoon: Museum projects. Each student will select at least one from a series of prominent museums to visit. Information will be provided. Cost per student: circa 10 Euro.
Evening: concluding event (reception, dinner?)
Sunday, March 14: Departure from Berlin
Note about meals: Aside from the opening dinner on Saturday, March 6 (and the closing event on March 13), students could be made financially responsible for their own lunches and dinners. On several days, using the student cafeteria at the FU is listed as recommended option, but students should feel free to seek out alternatives if they wish to do so.
Note about evenings: Most evenings are left open in this preliminary schedule. Events such as opera, concerts, etc. can be added based on available resources and opportunities.
