Course Description:
In this course, we will explore various genres of writing and communication; in particular we will study the impact of video, image, and technology on writing and the public sphere.  Students will gain experience in the theory of image and video as they pertain to public communication, writing, persuasion, and rhetoric.  Students will gain experience using and editing video to develop both group and individual projects.  Students are expected to research and compose a traditional research paper on a topic selected by the student.  Students, as part of the senior seminar, are required by the Professional Writing program to create an electronic portfolio.

Attendance

Attendance is simply expected for a course of this nature.  You have 3 days of absences to use for a course that meets 2 days a week.  They are designed for illness and other unexpected issues/problems.   Doctor’s appointments, court dates, vacations, financial aid appointments, or course registration/s are not reasons to miss class.  If you decide to use one of your 3 days for something other than illness, you simply have used one of your 3 days. You will lose 1/3 of a letter grade for each day missed after 3 from your final grade.  I will enforce all attendance policies.

Late Assignments/Work

I do not accept late homework or in-class projects.  Likewise, if your group presentation is not ready, your group may not do it another day.   If you come to class without your homework, you have missed it, do not go home and email it to me after class.  If you foresee problems please see me prior to the issue.

Group Assignments:
This semester you will be working with each other to complete some assignments and readings.  You are already placed in a group.  Get to know them and their emails, phone numbers, etc.  If any problem whatsoever arises within your group please see me immediately.  You will receive group grades on presentations and projects.  If any individual is habitually preventing the group from completing work I will wish to meet with you and your group to resolve the issue.  Stay in contact with your group and professor when appropriate.

Other Policies:

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is very serious.  While many students still take it upon themselves to cut and paste pieces of text/images from web pages and conveniently insert them into their projects, it is a violation to do so without attributing proper credit to the creator of the original text/image.  Remember: ideas as well as words/images are covered under the realm of plagiarism.  Nothing is wrong with using another’s work-JUST CITE THEM.  If you are found to be plagiarizing, I will first wish to speak with you.  If the matter is not resolved between you and I, we will then meet with the department chair for further action.  I will prosecute to the highest extent the university will allow if you are found to be plagiarizing materials.  At the minimum, you will receive an F for the specific assignment in question.

Students with Disabilities
It is the policy of UNCW to accommodate students with disabilities, pursuant to federal law, state law, and the university’s commitment to equal educational opportunities.  Any student with a disability who needs accommodation, for example, in seating placement or in arrangements for examinations, should inform the instructor at the beginning of the course.  Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact Disability Services, at 910-962-7555 or TDD 910-962-3853 or Dr. Peggy Turner via email at [turnerm@uncw.edu].
