Guideline 1: Look for Places Where Graphics Can Increase Your Communication's Usefulness and Persuasiveness

Usefulness

  • Show how something looks

  • Show how something is constructed

  • Show readers how to do something

  • Explain a process

  • Make facts easy to find (see my bullets?)

  • Show trends and other numerical relationships

Persuasiveness

  • Do not use visuals that do not serve a specific purpose

  • Use graphics that support your points

  • Notice the example using a bar graph (fig. 13.2) to persuade greenhouse owners could lower their winter hearing bill
