Amelia Earhart, world-renowned woman in aviation, was born on July 24, 1897 at the
home of her parents and grandparents in Atchison, Kansas.
She had her first lesson in aviation on January 2, 1921, from another female
pilot--Neta Snook Southern. She later worked to save money to buy her
first airplane, on her 24th birthday.
Amelia's career as an aviator lasted only a few short years...
In 1928, she received instant recognition as the first woman to fly across the
Atlantic.
On May 20-21, Amelia was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.
In 1935, Amelia became the first person--woman or man--to fly from Hawaii to the
mainland US.
Amelia Earhart disappeared while on the last leg of her
around-the-world flight on July 2, 1937. Radio contact was lost and people
speculated that the plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
The events surrounding the mysterious disappearance of Amelia
