NC STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY

MISSION :: North Carolina first established a Standard Course of Study in 1898. The North Carolina Standard Course of Study provides every content area a set of competencies for each grade and high school course. Its intent is to ensure rigorous student academic performance standards that are uniform across the state. It is based on a philosophy of teaching and learning that is consistent with current research, exemplary practices, and national standards.

  • North Carolina Extended Content Standards
    The No Child Left Behind Act requires that all students, including those with the most significant cognitive disabilities, have access to the standard course of study at grade level. This document provides entry point extensions so that all students can have meaningful and functional access to grade level standards. This reference document should be used to develop goals, activities and materials for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.

  • Occupational Course of Study
    The Occupational Course of Study is one of four courses of study a student with disabilities may complete to graduate with a high school diploma in North Carolina. The Occupational Course of Study is intended to meet the needs of a small group of students with disabilities who require a greatly modified curriculum that focuses on post-school employment and independent living.

  • The Balanced Curriculum: A Guiding Document for Scheduling and Implementation of the NC Standard Course of Study in the Middle Grades
    This guiding document for the middle grades focuses on the importance and value of delivering a well-rounded education which includes all areas of the Standard Course of Study. The PowerPoint includes notes that can be used to provide an overview of the initiative and resulting document.

  • Operating Procedures Manual Enrollment of High School Intellectually Gifted and Mature Students in Community
    These procedures have been prepared cooperatively by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to facilitate effective planning for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools in North Carolina. These procedures replace previous procedures for Huskins, concurrent enrollment, and intellectually gifted students programs. This document is effective with the planning cycle for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools for the 2004-2005 high school and college academic year.

    The Middle School Task Force Report includes data and research collected over a two-year period regarding the status of middle level education in our state. The Task Force provides the first comprehensive look at middle grade education since the 1989 publication of Last Best Chance. This document includes recoomendations endorsed by the State Board of Education.
