Luke Modifies Mark

I. The Baptism of Jesus in Luke vs. Mark

II. The Genealogies of Luke and Matthew

III. Luke's Focus on Jerusalem

1. Does Luke Change the Order of Jesus' Last Two Temptations
To Make the Last Temptation Occur in Jerusalem

Matthew

Luke

4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 4:2 He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.

Temptation #1
4:3 The tempter came and said to him,
"If you are the Son of God,
command these stones to become loaves of bread." 4:4 But he answered, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Temptation #2
4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, 4:6 saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" 4:7 Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Temptation #3
4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor;
4:9 and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." 4:10 Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" 4:11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 4:2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished.

Temptation #1
4:3 The devil said to him,
"If you are the Son of God,
command this stone to become a loaf of bread
." 4:4 Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"

Temptation #3
4:5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 4:6 And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 4:7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." 4:8 Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"

Temptation #2
4:9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,
saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 4:10 for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' 4:11 and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" 4:12 Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" 4:13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

2. Luke Changes the Post-Resurrection Rendezvous Location
    From Galilee to Jerusalem

Matthew

Mark

Luke

28:1 After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

Matthew Injects Drama

28:2 And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 28:3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 28:4 For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men.

28:5 But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 28:6 He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

28:7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples, 'He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.' This is my message for you."

28:8 So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

16:1 When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 16:2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 16:3 They had been saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?"
16:4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.
16:5 As they entered the tomb
they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right
side; and they were alarmed.

16:6 But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him.

16:7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you."

16:8 So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone,
for they were afraid
.

24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.

24:2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 24:3 but when they went in, they did not find the body. 24:4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 24:5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground,

but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

24:6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 24:7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."

See Below Luke 24:45-49

24:9 and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.

But in Luke the Apostles do NOT Go to the Galilee
to Meet the Risen Jesus, as they did in Mark and Matthew.
Instead they Remain in Jerusalem where Jesus Appears to them
and Orders them to Remain there to Receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost:

24:45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
24:46 and he said to them, "Thus it is written,
that
the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day,
24:47 and that
repentance and forgiveness of sins
is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations
,

beginning from Jerusalem
.

24:48 You are witnesses of these things.
24:49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised;

so stay here in the city
until you have been clothed with power from on high
."

IV. Was Jesus' Death an Atoning Sacrifice?

1. Was the Temple Veil Torn Before or After Jesus Death?
What Were the Centurion's Words After Jesus' Death?

Matthew

Mark

Luke

27:45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

27:46 And about three o'clock Jesus cried with a loud voice,
"
Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is,
"
My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me
?
"

27:47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "This man is calling for Elijah." 27:48 At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. 27:49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him."

27:50 Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

The earth shook, and the rocks were split. 27:52 The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 27:53 After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many.

27:54 Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said,
Truly this man was God's Son!

15:33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

15:34 At three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means,
"
My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me
?

15:35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah." 15:36 And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down."

15:37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
15:38
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

Matthew Injects More Drama

15:39 Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last,
he
said,
Truly this man was God's Son!

23:44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,

Why does Luke leave all this out?
Why does he change Jesus' words?

In Luke the Temple Veil Tears
before Jesus Dies

23:45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 23:46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said,
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit
." Having said this, he breathed his last.

Why does Luke Change
the Centurion's Words?

23:47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said,
Certainly this man was innocent.

2. How Many Cups at the Last Supper? One or Two?
Was the Institution of the Communion Sacrament
at the Last Supper a Later Addition to Luke?
    And if so . . .
Was Luke's original Last Supper only a "remembrance" of Jesus
instead of the "New Testament" or "New Covenant"?

    Compare Luke 22:19-20 below to Paul's 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Matthew

Mark

Luke

26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said,
"
Take, eat; this is my body."

26:27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you;
26:28
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

14:22 While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said,
"
Take; this is my body."

14:23 Then he took a cup,
and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it
. 14:24 He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."

22:15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 22:16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 22:17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; 22:18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

22:19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "
This is my body, which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me."

How Many Cups in Luke?

22:20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying,"This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood."

Compare Luke's Last Supper to Paul's 1 Cor. 11:23-26

Paul says in 1 Cor. 11:23

"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which he was betrayed . . .

Could Luke's Version of the Last Supper have been adjusted by later copyists to conform it to Matt and Mark as well as to Paul?

Was Luke's Second Cup a later addition?

Paul 1 Cor. 11:23-26

. . . took bread;
24
and when he had given thanks, he broke it
and said, "Take, eat;
this is my body
which is
broken for you;

do this in remembrance of me
."

25
In the same manner
he also took
the cup after supper
, saying,

"
This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

This do, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me."
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Luke 22:19-20

19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given
thanks, he broke it

and gave it to them, saying,

"This is my body,
which is
given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me."

22:20 And he did the same
with
the
cup after supper, saying,

"This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood."

3. Luke Omits a Crucial Saying of Jesus that
Describes his Death as an Atoning Sacrifice

Matthew

Mark

Luke

20:24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers.

20:25 But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.
20:26 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, 20:27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave;

20:28 just as
the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."

10:41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.
10:42 So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.
10:43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 10:44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.

10:45 For
the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many
."

22:24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
22:25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors.
22:26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.
22:27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 22:28 "You are those who have stood by me in my trials; 22:29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, 22:30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

V. Jesus' Bloody Sweat in Luke

Luke makes Jesus less Passionate, more Philosophical
Jesus is NOT Grieved and Distressed in Luke,
Prays to the Father only Once, NOT Three Times as Matt/Mark.
Later Christian Scribes try to fix this by Adding Verses 22:43-44,
These verses are not found in the Most Important Manuscripts of the Greek Text of Luke;
but see especially the interesting case of Codex Sinaiticus: the first scribe (a) includes 43-44,
a second scribe (b) negates them with dots, and a third scribe (c) re-adds them erasing the dots.

Matthew

Mark

Luke

26:36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

26:37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and
began to be grieved and agitated
.
26:38 Then he said to them, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me." 26:39 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed,

"My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want." 26:40 Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 26:41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

26:42 Again he went away for the second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done." 26:43 Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

26:44 So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. 26:45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

14:32 They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

14:33 He took with him Peter and James and John, and
began to be distressed and agitated
.
14:34 And said to them, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake." 14:35 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

14:36 He said,
"Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want." 14:37 He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 14:38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

14:39
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 14:40 And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him.

14:41 He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

22:39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 22:40 When he reached the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not come into the time of trial."

No Grief and Agitation in Luke

22:41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,

2:42 "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done."

22:45 When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, 22:46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial."

VI. Jesus and the Thieves at the Crucifixion:
Did both Thieves Taunt Jesus as in Matt/Mark, or
Did One Thief defend Jesus against the Other?
Is Luke putting more
Last Words in Jesus' Mouth
to make him seem more heroic, noble, philosophical?
Would Jesus have been doing all this talking
after being beaten severely with a
Roman Whip
then hanging on a cross for hours slowly dying?
Life of Brian

Matthew

Mark

Luke

27:33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 27:34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 27:35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; 27:36 then they sat down there and kept watch over him. 27:37 Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."

27:38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 27:39 Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads 27:40 and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 27:41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, 27:42 "He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 27:43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, 'I am God's Son.'"
27:44
The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.

15:22 Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). 15:23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. 15:24 And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take. 15:25 It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. 15:26 The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews."

15:27 And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. 15:29 Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 15:30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!" 15:31 In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. 15:32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe."

Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.

The Roman Whip

23:33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull,
they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left
.
23:34 Then Jesus said, "
Father,
forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing
."

And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 23:35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" 23:36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 23:37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" 23:38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."
23:39
One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him
and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" 23:40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 23:41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." 23:42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." 23:43 He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

VII. Delay of the End of Time in Luke
Is Luke "fixing" Jesus' failed prophecy in Matt/Mark?
Will the End come during the lifetime of Jesus' Contemporaries?

Matthew

Mark

Luke

16:27 "For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.

16:28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

8:38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." 9:1 And he said to them,
"
Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power."

9:26 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

9:27 But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."

For Luke, the Kingdom of God has already arrived
in the person of Jesus and his disciples.

10:1 After this the Lord appointed seventy others
and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place
where he himself intended to go. 10:2 He said to them . . .
10:8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you,
eat what is set before you; 10:9 cure the sick who are there,
and say to them,

'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

11:14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute;
when the demon had gone out, the one who had been mute spoke,
and the crowds were amazed. 11:15 But some of them said,
"He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons."
11:16 Others, to test him, kept demanding from him a sign from heaven.
11:17 But he knew what they were thinking and said to them,
"Every kingdom divided against itself becomes a desert, and house falls on house.
11:18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?
--for you say that I cast out the demons by Beelzebul.
11:19 Now if I cast out the demons by Beelzebul,
by whom do your exorcists cast them out?
Therefore they will be your judges. 11:20 But

if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons, then
the kingdom of God has come to you.

17:20 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees
when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered,
"The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed;
17:21 nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There it is!'

For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you
."

(Compare to the Gospel of Thomas, sayings 3 and 113)

Will the High Priest See Jesus' Second Coming?

Matthew

Mark

Luke

26:62 The high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?" 26:63 But Jesus was silent.

Then the high priest said to him, "I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah,
the Son of God."

26:64 Jesus said to him,
"
You have said so.

But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."

14:60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?" 14:61 But he was silent and did not answer.

Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah,
the Son of the Blessed One?"

14:62 Jesus said,
"
I am;

One of the "Minor Agreements"

and 'you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power,' and 'coming with the clouds of heaven.'"

How Many Questions in Luke?

Are Messiah, Son of Man, and Son of God different persons?

22:66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council.

Who Are the "They" in Luke?

22:67 They said,
"If you are the Messiah,
tell us."

He replied,

"If I tell you, you will not believe; 22:68 and if I question you, you will not answer. (see v. 70 below)

22:69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

22:70 All of them asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?"
He said to them,
 "
You say that I am."

6:17 He came down with them and
stood on a level place
with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 6:18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 6:19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.
6:20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said:

"Blessed are you who are poor,

6:21 "Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.

"Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
6:22 "Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 6:23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.
6:24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 6:25 "Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 6:26 "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets."

Matthew 7:12

Luke 6:31

Do to others as you would have them do to you
.

"An Eye for an Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth?"
