N. Abbott, Studies in Arabic Literary Papyri I: Historical Texts (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1957) 38-56. Using the legend of Adam and Eve as a base, it provides an excellent overview of the issues surrounding the transmission of biblical and extra-biblical lore to and within Islamicate literatures.

Michael Cook, The Koran: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000).

Encyclopaedia of the Qur’ān ( vols.; ed. Jane D. McAuliffe, et al.; Leiden: Brill, 2001- ). An impressive reference tool whose first volume (A-D) has just appeared. Biblical characters can be accessed under their standard spellings (for example, s.v. Abraham).

David J. Halperin, "Islamic Reflections of Merkabah Traditions," in his The Faces of the Chariot: Early Jewish Responses to Ezekiel’s Vision (Tübingen: J.C.B. Mohr, 1988) 467-90. Covers much more than the title implies.

Jacob Lassner, Demonizing the Queen of Sheba: Boundaries of Gender and Culture in Postbiblical Judaism and Medieval Islam (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993).

Hava Lazarus-Yafeh, Intertwined Worlds: Medieval Islam and Bible Criticism (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1992).

Gordon D. Newby, The Making of the Last Prophet: A Reconstruction of the Earliest Biography of Muhammad (Columbia, SC: University of South Carolina Press, 1989). Concentrates on the biblical antecedents of Muhammad’s prophetic vocation.

H. Speyer, Die biblischen Erzählungen im Qoran (reprinted, Hildesheim: G. Olms, 1988). First printed in 1931. Provides a wealth of aggadic and legendary lore surrounding the biblical characters presented in the Qur’ān.

Studies in Islamic and Judaic Traditions: Papers Presented at the Institute for Islamic-Judaic Studies, Center for Judaic Studies, University of Denver (2 vols.; ed. W.M. Brinner and S.D. Ricks; Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1986-89). Several papers focus on biblical and/or Qur’ānic themes.
