On-line Research with Elementary and Middle School Students.

Step 1. Access SIRS Discoverer at this URL www.sirs.com

Step 2. At the bottom of our Sirs Discover on the Web page you will see a link for the Tutorial. Everyone should do the Tutorial. The html version will load to your computer and run with no downloading required.


SIRS Discoverer includes supplemental learning materials including an Educator's Guide and Middle and Elementary level student workbooks, and Research Strategy Worksheets. The workbooks are designed to provide an overview of the database including search methods, tips, and topics to browse, and contain in-depth exercises that assist the user in the research process. Educators can also use them as curriculum tools.

Step 3. Locate the Workbooks link also at the bottom of the page. Please review the Educator’s Guide. Again, you can do this with the html choice for ease of use.

Step 4. Print out several of either the Elementary or Middle School Workbook. Perform 3 of the research exercises.

Step 5. Develop the overview of a lesson that would include Sirs on-line research. You can use the resources provided by sirs for the actual lesson or to assist you in creating one You will find numerous examples and activities under the Database Features and by the Reference Section. Identify the Sirs resources you want your students to use on you lesson overview. Please state your grade level the subject of your lesson. It’s your lesson, it can by one class period, one class block, or an entire week. It can be a multi-disciplinary unit involving other teachers. You are the teacher…you decide.

Step 6. Modify (can be done in pencil) several of the Workbook sheets you printed out in order to facilitate your pretend students doing your lesson. Remember, you only need to develop the overview of the lesson.
