CLASSROOM POLICIES
ATTENDANCE: Attendance to all lectures and laboratories is expected. Excessive absences may result in a lowered grade. Make-up lecture examinations and laboratory quizzes will not be given.
PUNCTUALITY: Lectures begin promptly at 11:00 AM and laboratories begin promptly at 2:00 PM. Tardiness will not be tolerated. Please make arrangements to be on time or you will be considered absent, even if you arrive a few minutes late.
FOOD, DRINKS, AND CLEANLINESS: Because we will be using museum study specimens throughout the semester, the following classroom regulations will be enforced to ensure that specimens will not be damaged and to ensure your safety. Food and drinks are not allowed in Friday Hall, Rooms 308 and Friday 301, under any circumstances. Furthermore, you should wash your hands with warm soapy water before and after each lecture and laboratory. Surgical gloves will be supplied by the instructor for those students who request them and for those laboratories that require their use.
EXPECTATIONS: "In choosing UNCW, you have become part of our community of scholars. We recognize that the UNCW learning experience is challenging and requires hard work. It also requires a commitment to make time available to do that hard work. The university expects you to make academics your highest priority by dedicating your time and energy to training your mind and acquiring knowledge. Academic success in critical thinking and problem solving prepares you for the changes and challenges you will encounter in the future. Our faculty and academic support resources are readily available as partners in this effort, but the primary responsibility for learning is yours."
GRADING: This class has a total of 600 points (three lecture examinations are each worth 100 points and six laboratory quizzes are each worth 50 points). Your final grade is based on a 10-point scale as follows: >537 points is an A, 478-537 is a B, 418-477 is a C, 358-417 is a D, and <358 points is a F. Do not expect a curve. I will not use a +/- grading scale unless the majority of the class requests its use. The final lecture examination is not cumulative.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: "The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is committed to the proposition that the pursuit of truth requires the presence of honesty among all involved. It is therefore this institution's stated policy that no form of academic dishonesty among its faculty or students will be tolerated. Although all members of the university community are encouraged to report occurrences of dishonesty, each individual is principally responsible for his or her own honesty."
DISABILITY SERVICES: "The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is open and accessible to students with disabilities. The Coordinator of Disability Services will be glad to meet with faculty, parents, or students either personally or by phone to appraise your special needs, make referrals, and arrange for necessary accommodations. Students are not required to identify themselves if they do not want to avail themselves."
CELL PHONES: Cell phones are disruptive in class and should be turned off before entering all lectures and laboratories.
