SKETCH
| I am a native North Carolinian, born in Charlotte and raised in Raleigh. I moved to Wilmington and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where I received a B.S. degree in Biology. While at UNCW, I was fortunate to travel to Ecuador and work with Amazonian bats and other small mammals. I then moved to East Lansing, Michigan, and went to Michigan State University, where I got a M.S. degree in Zoology under the direction of Rollin H. Baker. While enrolled as a graduate student at MSU, I got the opportunity to spend the summer in Zacatecas, Mexico, learning more about Neotropical mammals. Next, I moved to Lubbock, Texas, and got a Ph.D. in Zoology from Texas Tech University under J. Knox Jones, Jr. During that time I went to Bolivia and Mexico on several occasions. Now I'm back in Wilmington, teaching at UNCW. I have taken students to such places as Kenya, the Hudson Bay (Manitoba), the lower Rio Grande (Texas), and the Chiricahua Mountains (Arizona), remembering how my early trips influenced my decision to become a professional biologist. My traditional classes also have an emphasis on field work, including my favorite--the five-mile hike up Mt. Mitchell through northern hardwood and spruce/fir forests. |
