EDN 414
Experiencing the Cultural Arts
Rebecca Walker

Too often exposure and experiences with the arts is left to the specialty teachers and treated as a separate part of the curriculum.  This course is not designed to make you an expert in any of these areas or to replace the importance of qualified arts teachers for children.  Rather, it is designed to invite you into the world of the arts and to help you see the many ways in which the arts can enrich and support your classroom curriculum.

This first electronic portion of the course will help you to be prepared for the one-day session on campus.  There you will be involved in interactive workshops that will help you experience the cultural arts – storytelling and drama, creative movement, music, and visual art.  The application of what we have studied together will come in your internship where you will plan and teach lessons in the content area that utilize the cultural arts to help children learn the content or to show what they have learned about the content.

Please read all the items in the overview section.  We will discuss these in our opening session but I will assume that you know what they are as we talk.  Complete all the assignments for Monday, January 10You will be responsible to have these with you that day.
