About

Dr. Ron Vetter is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and co-founder of the technology company Mobile Education LLC. His research been supported by the USWEST Foundation, NSF, USDA, NASA, and others.


Vetter received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from North Dakota State University and his PhD in computer science from the University of Minnesota. He has published more than 100 journal, conference, and technical papers and has served as the PI or Co-PI on grants and contracts exceeding $5 million dollars.


Dr. Vetter is currently the editor-in-chief of Computer, the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society. He previously served on the editorial advisory board of Communications of the ACM, the flagship publication of the ACM, from 1996-2008, and is an ACM Distinguished Lecturer. He was selected as the 2001-2002 ACM Outstanding Lecturer of the Year.


Dr. Vetter received his B.S and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from North Dakota State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Computer Science.

Research Interests

Recent research projects include: Grid Computing, the iLumina Digital Library Project, and a handheld computing project known as Project Numina.


Current research focuses on building mobile phone applications based on the Short Message Service. Vetter is the co-founder of Mobile Education, LLC and Powerplay Mobile, LLC.
