Classical IP over ATM

• Classical IP (CIP) over ATM is a means of providing network connectivity over ATM with a network protocol stack that is both compatible with IP and is "ATM aware". Unlike LANE, CIP works with the network layer (i.e., IP) instead of the data link layer (i.e., MAC sub-layer) of the TCP/IP protocol stack. Defined by Internet RFC 1577.

• Current Status of IP over ATM

  The Routing Over Larger Clouds (ROLC) working group of the IETF is investigating the possibility of setting up direct connections over ATM. The ROLC group is developing a new protocol called "Next Hop Resolution Protocol" (NHRP) to bypass some or all of the routers between the source and destination hosts by establishing a direct connection through the ATM switches.
