Master of Science in Chemistry with Certificate in Biotechnology
A joint program between UNCW and Vidya Pratishthan's School of Biotechnology (VSBT, India)
Program Description:
This one-of-a-kind program enables students in India to obtain a MS in Chemistry from UNCW, without having to travel to the US. In this program, the thesis requirement of a traditional MS in Chemistry is replaced by the biotechnology specialization. What makes this unique program possible is the partnership between UNCW and VSBT. In this program, students will take advanced, graduate level chemistry subjects, taught entirely online by professors at UNCW, and will spend one semester at VSBT, Baramati, India, to complete the biotechnology requirements for the MS degree.
Course Offerings:
At UNCW: Advanced Organic Chemistry (Fall), Medicinal Chemistry (Summer), Advanced Physical Chemistry (Fall), Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Fall), Inorganic Chemistry (Fall), Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (Spring), Biochemistry (every other year, Fall), Industrial & Polymer Chemistry (Spring), Heterocycles (Spring), NMR and Mass Spectrometry (Spring), Graduate Seminars (Summer), Comprehensive Literature Research (Summer).
At VSBT: Cell and Molecular Biology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry & Microbial genetics, Immunology, Vaccines Clinical and Stem Cells, Chemi-informatics, Environmental Science, Molecular Microbiology, Proteomics, Istrumentation, Seminars.
Degree Requirements:
This program leading to the Master of Science degree requires a minimum of 36 graduate credits. Of these, a minimum of 21 credits must be taken from on-line graduate chemistry subjects offered by UNCW, and a minimum of 9 credits must be taken at VSBT. The remaining 6 credits can be taken at either institution, as approved by the student’s advising committee. While there are no restrictions on the minimum number of UNCW online subjects to be taken in a semester, all the VSBT credits must be taken in a single semester, and the program should be completed within six years of the date of first registration for graduate study.
Admission Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in science with a B average or better in chemistry subjects from an accredited college or university.
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Application of graduate admission to UNCW.
- Three letters of recommendation by individuals in professionally relevant fields (including one from VSBT).
- Official transcripts of all prior university or college work (non-US transcripts must be evaluated by World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators).
Application Deadlines and Procedures:
Applications to UNCW will be accepted and considered until June 15th for Fall admissions, and November 15th for Spring admissions. Please see Application Instructions.
