After deliberating for a couple of years I finally signed on to do a departmental honors project with Dr. Varadarajan through the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in Fall 2005.  I am working on the synthesis of a fluorescent compound that can bind to specific sequences in the minor groove of DNA and on the development of a bioassay which can be used to measure the binding affinity of compounds binding to the DNA minor groove.  Last fall I was selected for the GlaxoSmithKline Women in Sciences mentorship where I am able to correspond directly with a scientist at GSK and learn more about the pharmaceutical industry.

Working in this lab is more than just organic synthesis, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such great people who support my weekly cheeseburger addiction.  I am graduating in May 2006 with a BS in Biology and BA in Chemistry with honors.  I am excited to announce that I will officially be heading to graduate school in the fall to get my PhD in Organic or Biochemistry at Georgia Tech as they have offered me the Cherry Emerson Fellowship for graduate study.

I am forever indebted to Dr. Varadarajan for all his encouragement, support, and all the things he has taught me over the last three years here at UNCW.
