I am currently a graduate student working with Dr. Varadarajan, but I began my work here as one of his first undergraduate students in late fall of 2003.  As an undergraduate I worked on a new methodology for developing the DNA damaging compounds.  For my research as an undergraduate, I received the Undergraduate Research Fellowship for Developing a New Methodology For Synthesizing Cell-Specific DNA-Damaging Drugs.  It was this research that I presented at the ACS regional conference in Raleigh in November 2004.  It was for this trip to Raleigh that I received the UNCW Undergraduate Travel Award.  In the spring of 2005 I took my research to Raleigh again for a presentation to the North Carolina senators at the "Research in the Capital" undergraduate research symposium. Now as a graduate student I am working on synthesizing and characterizing cytotoxic compounds that will selectively target cells that over express the estrogen receptor, like breast cancer cells.  I enjoy all the work I’ve done here in the lab and the experience has proved invaluable to my academic career.  I have learned more in this lab over the past two and a half years than I have in any class room over the past five years.  Dr. Varadarajan is one of the best, most caring professors that encourages all of his students to achieve their highest potential.  If it weren’t for Dr. V, I wouldn’t have had as many outstanding opportunities. Not to mention that the people I work with are great, and I feel I have made some lifelong friends.
