Simulating the United Nations

Negotiating Reform of the United Nations
United Nations Security Council
Spring 2009
Dr. Tan regularly conducts negotiation simulations as part of her PLS 111: Global Politics, PLS 292 Model United Nations, and PLS 427: International Organizations courses.
Here are some photos of the Spring 2009 PLS 427 negotiation. Student pairs representing countries on the United Nations Security Council attempted to develop a Security-Council approved draft of a plan for United Nations reform. Issues considered included: reform of the Security Council itself (including numbers of permanent members, vetoes, and voting), management problems, the Human Rights Council, and more.
Japan (in the pink and blue) trying to get
a seat on the Security Council
Uganda (left two
delegates), a small country, trying to be heard.
The French team
uses charm and smiles to get its way.
Vietnam (r)
had many jokes about the name of the country's currency. Here chatting with
Croatia.
Burkina Faso,
Mexico, Turkey, Costa Rica, and Austria in a big pow wow.
Permanent nations
hold deciding importance. Here, China (l) and the UK (r) hash matters out.
More permanent
member consultations. Here, Russia (l) and the US (r) work on a Security Council
reform plan.
Russia stands
up to make a point. Japan listens dejectedly (in the pink and blue). Japan
didn't get its permanent seat in our negotiations. Alas.
