Global Issues in Historical Perspective: The History of Tourism
This course focuses on the history of tourism in global context from pilgrimage of the Middle Ages to the more recent growth of the leisure economy. The course has two components. The first takes place in Summer I and part of Summer II on the UNCW campus and focuses on the major themes in the history of tourism using Ireland as a case study. The second is a twelve day trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland to visit some of the places that played key roles in the development of the Irish tourist economy: the Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol, Leinster House, Temple Bar, Glenariff Forest, Giant’s Causeway, and Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge. The trip will conclude by retracing the traditional pilgrimage route up Croagh Patrick in County Mayo.
