HST570: Public History Theory and Practice
Bibliographic Essay Assignment
Purpose
This assignment is a focused research project that allows you to analyze the secondary sources on a particular topic in the public history field. You must clearly define your research project to allow for pointed analysis of the issues brought up by the scholarship and identify any “gaps,” areas that have not been fully explored.
Requirements
15 pages exclusive of bibliography
Bibliography must be annotated (3-4 sentences summarizing thesis and method)
Must include at least four full-length books on the topic and six journal articles
A 3-page proposal with bibliography is due in class on November 1
Due DECEMBER 10, 5:00PM in instructor’s mailbox in History Department
Documented using Chicago Style (Humanities Note System)
Grading (65 points)
This assignment will be graded on:
The depth of analysis: does the author adequately summarize and critique the scholarship on the topic?
Basic requirements: does the author meet the minimum requirements identified above?
Clarity of argument: is the essay clearly organized and the argument well articulated?
Suggestions for further study: does the author provide direction for studying aspects of the topic that have not been adequately explored in the existing scholarship?
