The UNCW Program and Úbeda |
|
The UNCW Summer Program in Úbeda provides students with an intensive immersion experience in Spanish language and culture. Participants gain a rich knowledge and understanding of the cultures of Spain while studying, researching, and traveling throughout the country and, most importantly, by living with a Spanish host family. Located in the southern region of Spain known as Andalucía, Úbeda was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003 due to its magnificent Renaissance architecture. The city sits on a ridge overlooking the olive groves of the Guadalquivir Valley and is conveniently located close to other famous cities and places of historical interest such as Córdoba, Granada, Málaga, Sevilla, and Valencia. Úbeda is a small, intimate city that is safe for students, who can walk everywhere they need to go. It is an ideal place to study Spanish, offering quiet parks and plazuelas, majestic churches, labyrinthine streets, friendly locals, and fabulous culture and history. To date Úbeda has hosted 10 successful UNCW summer study abroad programs. This program is for students who are looking for a study abroad experience that combines knowledge gained in the classroom with its practical application in the real world. As part of the UNCW summer program, students learn typical Andalusian dances such as Sevillanas and Flamenco, enjoy a day of outdoor adventures in the Cazorla Nature Reserve, play soccer with local students, visit world-renowned monuments and historic sites, and engage in activities beyond the classroom that give them an authentic taste of Spanish life and culture.
The UNCW home institution in Úbeda is Escuelas Profesionales de la Sagrada Familia (SAFA), which was founded in 1940 by the Jesuit priest Rafael Villosada just after the close of the Spanish Civil War in order to provide needy children with a decent education. Today SAFA is a semi-private institution that offers programs in elementary, physical, music, and English education. The SAFA building affords a relaxed, scholarly atmosphere where UNCW students have the opportunity to interact with Spanish students, who are typically very friendly and eager to practice English and learn about American culture. All UNCW students stay with host families that are affiliated with SAFA (e.g., professors, staff, parents of students). Everyone at SAFA is very friendly; and the school is conveniently located within walking distance of all host families. |

SPN 303: Spanish Conversation. Prerequisite: A grade of 'C' or better in SPN 302 or SPN 315, or appropriate placement test score. Intensive training in spoken Spanish. 3 credit hours. SPN 305: Spanish Composition. Prerequisite: A grade of 'C' of better in SPN 302, SPN 303, or SPN 315 or corequisite of SPN 304. Intensive training in written Spanish. 3 credit hours. SPN 307: Phonetics. Prerequisite: A grade of 'C' or better in SPN 302 or SPN 315. Various speech phenomena; practice in phonetic transcription, pronunciation, and intonation. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, 8:30 to 2:15. Students can enroll in up to 3 of the 4 courses offered. Class sessions meet for 1.5
hours. Some afternoons are dedicated to cultural
activities. Most weekends the group will travel to a different city. (See detailed itinerary below.) Prerequisites Students must have passed SPN 302 or equivalent course successfully, or placed in 303 after taking the Department of Foreign Language and Literatures placement exam. Be a degree-seeking student in good standing. Be at least a sophomore at time of participation. Have a 2.5 GPA at time of application. Students must obtain permission to participate from one of the professors directing the program. This estimate includes: UNCW tuition and fees for 6 or 9 credits. Roundtrip airfare from Wilmington or Raleigh to Madrid, Spain. (Payable to designated travel agent.) UNCW and SAFA costs (honoraria, supplies, support charges, etc.). Lodging with Spanish host families. 3 meals a day and laundry. Group ground transportation. Cultural excursions and activities. Study abroad health insurance. There is a $225 non-refundable deposit, which will be applied toward the program cost.

Granada We will visit the cathedral, the museum of the Catholic Kings, Fernando and Isabel, and the Albaicín (medieval moorish quarter). We will experience a flamenco performance in a gypsy cave, and see the Moorish palace fortress known as the Alhambra, the most visited monument in Europe. |

Baeza Baeza is considered Úbeda's twin city. It is equally rich in culture and history, and is another excellent example of the Renaissance period. |

Sevilla Sevilla is a magnificent city, especially at night. We will tour the Jewish neighborhood, the Gothic cathedral (the third largest in the world), and the Giralda. We will also visit the Plaza de España, the Torre de Oro, and the Reales Alcázares. |

Madrid
|
|
|
|
A historic city 30 minutes north of Madrid. We'll visit the Roman acqueduct, the Gothic cathedral, and the Alcázar, the castle that inspired Disney's Cinderella Castle. |
