ISSUES AND TRENDS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Designed to focus on emerging directions related to the education of students with exceptionalities.  Relevant instructional, assessment, service delivery, technology, management, legal, psychological, medical, and social issues will be examined as well as implications for the schools.

 

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This course will emphasize the Watson School of Education conceptual framework, developing highly competent professionals to serve in educational leadership roles.

 

GENERAL OBJECTIVES   During this course, students should be able to:

1.                  Classify several current issues and trends related to such special education topics as technology, services, assessment, instruction, behavior management, laws, early childhood education, adolescence, adulthood, and cultural diversity

2.                  State historical events that provide foundations for the current issues

3.                  Classify theories and controversies related to current issues

4.                  Generate decisions about the implications of current issues for schools, teachers, parents, and children

5.                  Identify current school practices and future trends

6.                  Generate a review of literature on several current issues

7.                  Generate critical questions about current issues and trends

8.                  Generate a synthesis of current issues and trends

 

REQUIREMENTS

1.                  Readings on assigned topics in preparation for class discussions

2.                  Review of related literature for each class including abstracts, lists of questions, reflections, and bibliographies

3.                  Presentations on current issues in special education

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

GRADING POLICIES

1.                  Class sessions must be attended to receive course credit.

2.                  Presentation and literature review grades will be based on ideas, organization, and style of presentation (ideas will count double)

3.                  Grades will be assigned as follows:

A         94-100

B         86-93

C         70-85

F          below 70

4.         Final grades will be determined as follows:

Presentations            40%

Literature Review     40%

Class participation    20%

Final Grade                100%   (If any course requirements are not submitted by due date, the final grade will be lowered)
