TEXT:  Mathematics:  For Elementary Teachers, A Contemporary Approach ,

Seventh edition, by Musser, Burger and Peterson.  Math 141 includes chapters 1-9.

INTRODUCTION:  Welcome to Math 141, Basic Concepts of Mathematics I.

The purpose of this course is to develop a better understanding of basic mathematics.  While studying concepts such as problem solving, logical reasoning, sets, number theory, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and decimal numbers, you will extend your ability to understand and use mathematics.  Most of you are planning to teach in elementary or middle school, so in addition to your being able to do mathematics it is very important that you are able to explain how to do mathematics.  Whether or not you plan to teach, this course should help you understand mathematics better so that you will be able to apply it to everyday life.

This course will be facilitated in a hybrid mode – both in class and online.  Course information will be available online by chapters (modules).  There will be online assignments and activities, but we will meet for in-class activities during our regularly scheduled class time.  You can access the online portion of this course via SeaPort or http://ncvista.blackboard.com/.  Students are expected to read the text and online lectures notes for each section before coming to class. Class time will primarily be used for activities to apply the course concepts and clarify information from the text.

GRADING:

Doing the Homework is an essential part of the course.  Your textbook includes an access code for online homework.  The link to login to do online homework is in the Blackboard Course Website.    I will also give frequent quizzes, about two per week, to evaluate how well you understand the material covered.  There are no makeup quizzes.  Each quiz missed is a zero, but this will not affect your grade until you miss more than two quizzes, since I will drop your two lowest quiz grades.  Your participation in the online portion of this class (reading each module as it is assigned) will count as part of your grade.    There will be 2 tests during the semester, and a cumulative final exam.  There are no makeup tests without prior permission.  At anytime during the semester you can calculate your grade by dividing your total points by the total points possible, converting to a percent, and then use the following scale:

   93-100% A, 90-92% A-                      highest 5 quizzes at 20 points each   = 100 points

                        87-89% B+, 83-86% B, 80-82% B-                                Online homework = 100 points

                        77-79% C+, 73-76% C, 70-72% C-               2 tests at 100 points each     = 200 points

                        67-69% D+, 63-66% D, 60-62% D-              Online biography                   =     5 points

                        below 60% F                                            9 online modules at 5 points each =  45 points

                                                                                                                          Final exam    = 150 points

Total points for the semester    = 600 points

LEARNING CENTER:

The University Learning Center, located in Westside Hall, is available for students to receive free tutoring for this course.  Please see the tutors for help on homework and to study for tests.  More information (i.e. location, hours of operation, etc.) can be found at the following link:  http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/uls/math.htm .

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

It is very important that you attend class regularly!  If you must miss class, the following syllabus, and updated online syllabus and modules, will let you know what we covered and you are responsible for doing the assigned work.  More than two absences during a summer session is considered excessive.  Feel free to talk with me if you have an attendance problem.  If you are absent 2, or fewer, classes you have the option of replacing one test score with your percentage from your final exam.

DISABILITIES:

If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodation in this course, you should inform me of this fact in writing within the first week of class or as soon as possible.  If you have not already done so, you must register with the Office of Disability Services in Westside Hall, 962-7555, and obtain a copy of your Accommodation Letter.  You should then meet with me to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of your Accommodation Letter.  http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/disability/

HONOR CODE:

All students are expected to read and abide by the Academic Honor Code that is in the Student Handbook and Code of Student Life.  It begins as follows:  “The University of North Carolina Wilmington is committed to the proposition that the pursuit of truth requires the presence of honesty among all involved. It is therefore this institution’s stated policy that no form of dishonesty among its faculty or students will be tolerated. Although all members of the university community are encouraged to report occurrences of dishonesty, each individual is principally responsible for his or her own honesty.”   Please read the rest of the details online:  http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/doso/documents/Code.Of.Student.Life.pdf , page 6.
