TEXT:  Algebra & Trigonometry: Enhanced with Graphing Utilities, 4th edition by Sullivan and Sullivan.  (Prentice Hall Publishing Company).

Web site:  http://www.prenhall.com/sullivanegu3e  We will cover chapters 6 - 8, and parts of chapter 11.  This includes the study of trigonometric functions and sequences with an emphasis on understanding and applications.  The use of a graphing calculator is an integral part of the course.

Additional Resources:

1. The Student Solutions Manual for the text is very helpful.  It is available in printed form (free if purchased bundled with a new text) or online (free when purchased with MyMathLab).

Web address:  www.coursecompass.com  for registration and/or purchase of MyMathLab packet.

[The Student Study Pack is currently free if bundled with a new or used text in the university bookstore.]

     Course Compass ID:  spike72186.

2. CALCULATOR:  A graphing calculator is required, but as a learning tool and for reinforcing concepts, not as a replacement for your work.  Instructor use of the TI-83 or TI-84 calculator will be integrated into the teaching of the course.  Thus the TI-83 or TI-84 is highly recommended as the one for students to purchase.  But if you own and know how to use another similar type of graphing calculator you may use it.  However, work must be shown on tests, quizzes and graded homework.  A Cell phone is not allowed to be used as a calculator.

GRADING:

It is your responsibility to read the text, review lecture notes, utilize features available on Course Compass, and do the suggested homework problems.  I will give frequent quizzes to evaluate how well you understand the concepts covered.  There will be no makeup quizzes!  Each quiz missed is a zero, but this will not affect your grade until you miss more than two quizzes since I will drop your two lowest quiz scores.  You will also have 3 tests during the semester, and a cumulative final exam.  There are no makeup tests without prior permission.  At anytime during the semester, to calculate your grade you just divide your total points by the number of points possible, convert this to a percent and use the following scale:

                        93-100% A, 90-92% A-                                  [5 quizzes at 20 points each = 100 points

87-89% B+, 83-86% B, 80-82% B-                    3 tests at 100 points each = 300 points

77-79% C+, 73-76% C, 70-72% C-                        cumulative final exam = 150 points

67-69% D+, 63-66% D, 60-62% D-              total points for the semester =550 points]

below 60% F

MATH LAB:

The math lab is now part of the University Learning Center on the first floor of Westside Hall.  Students may receive tutoring for help on homework and to study for tests.  You may also use the Learning Center for group study.  More about the Math Lab (i.e. hours of operation, etc.) can be found at the following links: http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/uls/math.htm & www.uncw.edu/mathlab.

ATTENDANCE:

It is important that you attend class regularly!  If you must miss class, the following assignments will let you know what we covered and you are responsible for doing the homework.  There are only 28 Tuesday, Thursday classes in a semester so more than 3 absences is considered excessive.  Feel free to talk with me if you have an attendance problem.  If you are absent 3 or fewer classes you have the option of replacing one test score with your percentage from your final exam.

DISABILITIES:

If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodation in this course, you should inform me of this fact in writing within the first week of class or as soon as possible.  If you have not already done so, you must register with the Office of Disability Services, 962-7555, and obtain a copy of your Accommodation Letter.  You should then meet with me to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of your Accommodation Letter.  http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/SDS/disability.html

HONOR CODE:

All students are expected to read and abide by the Academic Honor Code that is in the Student Handbook and Code of Student Life.  It begins as follows:  “The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is committed to the proposition that the pursuit of truth requires the presence of honesty among all involved.  It is therefore this institution’s stated policy that no form of dishonesty among it faculty or students will be tolerated.  Although all members of the university community are encouraged to report occurrences of dishonesty, each individual is principally responsible for his or her own honesty.”   Please read the rest of the details for yourself online:  http://www.uncw.edu/policies/04-100-academichonorcode.htm.

CELL PHONES:

Use of a cell phone for any reason is strictly prohibited. Please turn off all cell phones or use silent ring during class time.  You may NOT use your cell phone as a calculator.
