Football
and High School
Provocative: Football is better than high school.
Simplistic: Easy to point out how education/schools fall short.
Also, the main power a coach has – to prevent someone from playing – teachers don’t
have. Not so easy to say what we should do about it – weakness of the article.
What can we learn?
Why didn’t those skills and capabilities and that
enthusiasm show up more in the classroom?
We don’t usually ask what it is about school that
tends to make it unworthy of that kind of devotion – we tend to accept it/blame
the students. Football can offer a place of joy, a place where students lose
track of how hard they’re working.
School is a set of requirements, but sports are a
set of opportunities.
