BRIAN WYNNE (aka BRIAN GARFIELD) Brand of the Gun
(c.1968; November 1972; 3rd ACE printing )
This volume is a slightly different size than the
other ACE Doubles in the Western series, even though it is in the tęte-bęche
format. It is also missing the classic ACE color coding for the
western genre (green in the upper left corner with the green and white
spine). It is headlined as an "ACE Tall Twin Western"
and the price is 95˘.

to be an 1st ACE printing and maybe an ACE PBO. Will check
further.
11785 PHILIP
KETCHUM The Cougar Basin War and 11785b
LOUIS TRIMBLE Trouble Valley (cover by Gerald McConnell;
1970)
Note: The cover for Trouble Valley
is the same as for the ACE F-250 The Masked Gun by Barry
Cord (1963). An example of Gerald McConnell cover art reuse in two
different volumes.
GERALD McCONNELL (1931-2004) illustrated over 2000
paperback covers and was later known for his three-dimensional and
prop work. He was a leader of the Graphic Artist Guild in the 1970's
and '80's, and is credited with efforts in improving the protection of
copyrights for illustrators, led by Tad Crawford. In addtion, he
taught at the Pratt Institute, published several books on three
dimensional arts, was picture editor or art editor on various industry
books; and later became a successful publisher and owner of Madison
Square Press.

14193 NELSON NYE Death
Valley Slim (c.1963; listed as "First Book Publication") and
14193b NELSON NYE The Kid
From Lincoln County (c.1963; listed as "Complete Novel")
Death Valley Slim and The Kid From Lincoln County
were originally published as ACE Double F-184 (1963). As can be seen
from the cover (and the notation of "first book publication" for Death
Valley Slim) that this is an excellent example of the
re-numbering of old stock by ACE Books. It's great to have real
evidence to confirm this practice.
14195 KYLE
HOLLINGSHEAD Ransome's Debt and 14195b
MERLE CONSTINER Death Waits at Dakins Station (1970; artist

Note: See the discussion concerning the cover art

HARRY WHITTINGTON (1915 - 1989) was one of the most
prolific paperback writers of the 1950's through the 1960's. He wrote
in nearly every genre and had success as a screenwriter for
Warner-Brothers and created the television shows "The Lawman," "The

38500 KYLE
HOLLINGSHEAD Ransome's Move (1971; 1st ACE printing and PBO) and 38500b
L. L. FOREMAN Jemez Brand (c.1941, 1942; 1971; ACE book by
arrangement with the estate of L. L. Foreman; 1971)
41910 TOM WEST The
Gun From Nowhere (cover by Jerome Podwil; c.1961) and 41910b
BRIAN GARFIELD Justice at Spanish Flat (original title: Range
Justice; c.1960; listed as "Abridged;" by arrangement
with Thomas Bouregy & Co.)
Note: Here is where things get strange. The
Gun From Nowhere and Justice at Spanish Flat were
originally published as ACE Double F-106 (1960). Now, instead of
resuing old stock, it appears that ACE Books reissued this volume with
the same cover art as ACE F-106 (note that the Podwil signature that
is easily visible in the F-series has been nearly airbrushed out in
the five-digit series edition) for The Gun From Nowhere.
However, they did not reuse the cover art from ACE F-106 for Justice
At Spanish Flats (actually I think this cover art is from
another volume and will have to check to confirm/deny my memory).

48851-0 DEAN OWEN (aka
DUDLEY DEAN McGAUGHEY) Lone Star Roundup (cover by
William Douglas Rush; c.1968; 1972) and 48851-0b
TOM WEST Write His Name In Gunsmoke (cover by Victor
Prezio; c.1968; 1972)
Note: this volume has a 6-digit number. I
think this is either a misprint or the use of the later extension
numbering where editions were marked with a -0 (for 1st printing).
However, this is the first example I have seen in the ACE Western
Doubles. If any AIL users have other volumes similarly marked,
please send me an email.
Lone Star Roundup and Write His Name In
Gunsmoke was originally published as ACE Double G-742
(1968). This would make this ACE Letter-Number series a 2nd ACE
printing.
Dudley Dean McGaughey (1909 - 1986)
was a full-time freelance writer from the early 1950s until his death.
He produced a large number stories in the western, crime and detective
fiction, and adult (in the 1960s) soft-core genres. He had a
number of pseudonyms (Dean Owen, Hodge Evens, Dean McCoy, Owen
Dudley, Dean Dudley, Owen Evens, and a variety of others). Please

52035 ERIC ALLEN
(aka ERIC ALLEN-BALLARD) Marshall From Whiskey Smith and 52035b
GENE TUTTLE Impostors in Mesquite (cover art by MAC; 1969)
Original
cover art for Impostors in Mesquite by MAC (in lower
left corner). Oil on board (12" x 16"). The verso
indicates pencilled notation for "Imposters in Mesquite" as well as a
crossed-out notation for F-244 (Valley of Violence; 1962). This
was orignally used for the cover of Edwin Booth's Valley of
Violence and dates its provenance to no later than 1962.
A helpful AIL user indicates the "MAC' signature
identifies this work as done by Gerald McConnell. He appears to have
been a prolific illustrator for the western genre. Go
here to see a large collection of his work.

was originally published as ACE Double F-224 (1963). The white number
block on this volume indicates the reuse of the unsold F-series book

earlier volumes and how the issue of PBO (paperback original) among
the ACE Doubles can be easily confused.

The cover art for Smoky Pass in ACE 89590 is
a re-use of the cover art for Gunfire Heritage by Rod
Patterson (ACE Double M-108; 1965). Still trying to find who the
artist is for this cover art. Thank you to Dennis for this
observation.
I need a better image for ACE 89590a (Smoky Pass) and
also an image for ACE F-142. Thank you to David for the copy that you
found.
