NORMAN SAUNDERS (1906 - 1988) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and first studied art through a mail-order course. After working for Minnesota-based Fawcett Publications from 1928 to 1934, he moved to New York where he became a free-lance pulp artist. He continued his art training there, studying with Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art. After serving in the military in World War II, he returned to pulp and paperback illustration. In addition to his many pulp and paperback covers, Norman Saunders is also know for his infamous Mars Attacks and Wacky Packs trading cards, done for Topps. He was renowned for his ability to meet a publisher's deadline, and in the heyday of pulps and paperbacks, 1935-1953, he would often produce an astounding 100 paintings per year.

Cover art for both novels by Norman Saunders.

The listing "Complete & Unabridged" is a result of action by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the post-WWII publishing industry. To counter the wide-spread belief by the book-buying public that paperback books were always shortened version of the original hardcover texts, publishers were required by the FTC to prominently indicate on the front cover if there was an original title (often shown in parentheses) and to state that the book was either an "abridgement" or identical to the original text (listed as "Complete & Unabridged"). Please note that I have run across a suggestion that the cover art for D-46 (Chuck Martin story) was Allen Anderson. The Graham Holryod Paperback Prices and Checklist (2003) indicates Norman Saunders as the artist. Does any AIL user have a copy with a notation for Saunders? Let me know.

D-48 JIM MAYO (aka LOUIS L'AMOUR) Utah Blaine (1954; listed as an "ACE Original") and D-48b BRAD WARD Desert Showdown (original title: The Spell of the Desert; 1954; cover by Norman Saunders;1954; listed as "Complete and Unabridged")

Note: There is a change in the edition listing with D-78. Instead of "ACE Original" many of the following volumes have the notation of "Complete New Novel" or "Complete Novel." The question is whether this means "First Book Publication" which is used in the later ACE Letter-Number series.

D-86 RICHARD BRISTER The Shoot-Out at Sentinel Peak (1954; listed as "Complete and Unabridged") and D-86b ROY MANNING Tangled Trail (c. 1947, 1954; listed as "Complete and Unabridged")

Now for some editorial silliness.  Prior to D-180, all of the notations for "Complete Novel" or "Complete and Unabridged" were in standard 'caps' (upper case) for the phrase.  With ACE D-180, it appears that this set-up changed with the use of lower case for both.  As you move through this database, you will find that it is not consistent (argh - I spend a lot of time editing manuscripts for journals and a consistent approach is necessary). Just another ACE oddity.  I will try and reproduce the exact format used (but let me know if I miss any).

Note: With D-360 the notation of "First Book Publication" occurs and suggests that the "Complete Novel" notation may not indicate the same idea.

It appears that the artist name (R. Lance) on the cover art for  Johnny Sixgun is a pseudonym for the pulp- and paperback- artist Samuel Joseph Cherry (1903-1975).  His son, who contacted me with this information, indicates that Sam Cherry was asked to sign the work as "R. Lance," practicing the signature in his contact book by writing it out several times.  A good (short) biography with some of his works can be found at URL: http://www.pulpartists.com/Cherry.html.
