Vocabulary Strategies
   

1.  Contextual Redefinition (p.162)-First have students try to define words on their own without resources.  Next write a sentence using that word in a such a context so that its definition can be semantically determined.  Have students explain what words in the sentence helped them guess the definition.

2. Vocabulary Prediction Chart-Make a table with the following titles:  vocabulary word, my guess before reading, my guess after reading, and clue words. Have students guess at the meaning of the word prior to reading.  After reading the selection containing the vocabulary words, have them try to define them again.  Have them identify key words that helped them  with their definition.

3.  Visual Boxing (p. 173)-Divide a box into four sections.  In the top left box, write the word to be defined.  In the top right box, draw an illustration of that word. In the bottom left box, give an example of the word.  In the bottom right box give an opposite or non-example of that word.

4.  Cubing (p. 245)-Give students a pattern for a cube.  Have them 1) Write the vocabulary word 2) define it 3) write something personal it reminds them of 4) write a synonym 5) write an antonym and 6) illustrate it.  Hang the various vocabulary cubes in a mobile form.

5.  Context Relationship Procedure-Give students a list of new vocabulary words and divide them into groups. Have them write their own paragraphs and questions following the directions below.  Afterwards have them exchange their paragraphs with other groups and come up with the meaning of the words. Sentence 1-Uses word in context. Sentence 2-Does not use the word, but further explains it.  Sentence 3-Uses the word and contrasts it to an antonym.  Sentence 4-Uses the word and defines it.  Next, a multiple choice item is created to check meaning.

6. Word games-Seek and find puzzles Puzzlemaker.com, crossword puzzles,
concentration with words and definitions, charades, Password, Bingo

7. Morphemic Analysis-Teach students various word parts and their meanings to help them
determine new words.  For example, leuko means white; hemo means blood

8. Feature Analysis Chart (p.170) A chart that compares categories of words
in a table format.

10.  Context Prediction Chart-This is similar to the Vocabulary Prediction Chart, but calls for students to work with partners and classify words they've read in context as either words they know, don't know, or think they can guess.

12. Analogies- Analogies require critical and divergent thinking from your students.

13. Connect Two- Asks students to make connections with two of their vocabulary words.

14. Word Problems-(Math connection)-Give students a list of vocabulary words from the chapter and have them use two or three to create a word problem.
