THE VIOLENCE TURNS DEADLY
Rough Riders sweep into BrooklynAt the Sprunt Cotton Compress plant near the river, a group of whites led by Hugh MacRae trained the Gatling gun on a black crowd, and bloodshed was prevented only by the cooler heads of others present (according to one story, James Sprunt).Several black men are killed at 4th and Harnett. A black man named Sam Gregory is killed at Third and Swann. An unknown black man is killed in the area near the railroad. Another black man is killed in a shanty near 6th and Bladen. Daniel Wright, a black political leader suspected by the whites of shooting Mayo, is hunted down and murdered by Redshirts in his home. Two black men are shot down white fleeing from a dance hall in "Manhattan Park" near 6th and Bladen Wright's friend Josh Halsey is hunted down and murdered as he flees his home. All around the city, there are armed white men who hear of the violence and begin to move toward Brooklyn. News of the violence flashed by wireless to the rest of the state and throughout the South. Soon Wilmington was receiving dozens of offers of white supremacist militia from other cities. "We can send 500 armed men. Lumberton"--a typical message.
Meanwhile, in Wilmington, there were dozens of scenes of violence and confrontation, as shots were heard throughout the city and rumors spread.
