Atlantic coast bluefish: Estimates of bluefish survival after being caught by recreational anglers are needed to improve estimates of total population mortality used in the stock assessment of Atlantic coast bluefish. Field estimates of bluefish hooking mortality were made in 2001 using fish that were captured by hook-and-line and then transported to the laboratory for extended monitoring. In fall 2002, juvenile bluefish (200-250mm TL) were captured by seine and transported to the laboratory for use in controlled hooking experiments in spring 2003. Fish have been maintained at elevated water temperatures and fed continuously to ensure minimum sizes of 400mm TL at the initiation of spring experiments. Laboratory experiments will evaluate the effects of time exposed to air and transport processes on bluefish stress levels and short-term mortality.
