Presentation Speech

Special Olympics of North Carolina (New Hanover County)

Good evening and thank you for joining us in the recognition of the Volunteer of the Year for the New Hanover County chapter of Special Olympics of North Carolina.  My name is Jonathan Batts, I am the head of the delegation and special events.  It is my pleasure to present this award of achievement to the volunteer of the year. Before I present this prestigious achievement award I would like to take the opportunity to explain what it takes to be awarded this honor and what SONC is to the community of New Hanover County.  Our athletes oath is “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

The New Hanover County chapter of SONC is a non-profit organization that strives for excellence in all of its endeavors whether it is a small task or team oriented.  This organization is comprised of many individuals who put time and work into each event that is planned and then implemented in Wilmington or out of town.  The money in which this organization grows from is donations from outside resources such as Bank of America.

Each person whom is chosen by our staff must contribute in fundraising events, plan events, and attend mainly all events that SONC is part of or contributing too. The way in which this award is chosen is by the board of directors at the state level along with the local chapter in Wilmington (New Hanover County).  After each season of sports is completed names are recognized by the coaches of the different sports teams and as well as the staff of the events.  All the events are comprised of volunteers but this person has shown more than what is required at all events that SONC has been involved in within the last year.  This award is given out once a year to a volunteer has made a consistent contribution to our organization in many ways but keeps our motto alive.  Striving for excellence in all of our endeavors is a key aspect in our organization and this volunteer has gone beyond the limits of others.

The recipient has shown an all around positive character, great attitude with many situations, great leadership skills, and raised an impressing amount of money for the Polar Plunge fundraiser.  It does not just take a good personality to come off as a person who deserves this award, the winner of this award has shown a selfless demeanor that is felt throughout the organization.  Putting everyone in front of themselves and not letting a bump in the process stop them from completing the task is why this person has been chosen for this. If there was one way to sum up this person in a sentence it would entail the aspects of the putting everyone else’s happiness prior to themselves because happiness is what makes the world go round.

And on that note without any further a due, it is my utmost pleasure to present the Volunteer of the Year award to Henry Wiley. Henry if you would please come receive your award.
