Good afternoon and welcome to the Awards and Special Recognitions Ceremony here at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

My name is Emma Lee and I have been a volunteer here for just a few months, but I’ve quickly grown accustom to the way things work. I remember the first thing I learned in training was the mission statement "The mission of Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter is to provide the highest level of care and comfort to patients with life-limiting illness, support and counseling to families, and education to the community." As most of you know this simply would not be possible without all the men and women who donate their time and their stamina to help those in need.

When Lower Cape Fear Hospice was first founded thirty years ago there were barely 200 volunteers helping out a handful of employees. This number has risen to an impressive 325 last year. The volunteers are what make this hospice possible and believe it or not we have one person to thank for all of it. Volunteer presence is the highest it’s ever been and I have the opportunity to recognize the person who has set a record in the number of volunteers recruited. This person alone has recruited almost forty volunteers a year.

I have come to know this wonderful lady over the past few months and we’ve developed an unforgettable friendship, as I’m sure she has with most of the volunteers. She is the definition of caring, treating us like family and making us feel welcome in the hospice community. She is an inspiration in the ways she teaches us to educate anyone and everyone about end of life care. Most of all she sets a genuine example for us to follow. She stays up late taking calls from people in need of answers and gets up early making calls to check on volunteers and patients alike. Even her weekends are often dedicated to helping here at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

She has made the Life Care Center a better place and we want to recognize her by painting her name on a tile on The Celebration of Life Wall. When she retires next month we will always think of how lucky we were to have a record setting volunteer coordinator like Katrinka Webb.
