First, I would like to welcome everyone to this award ceremony today to honor our intern of the year.  I would also like to thank every intern that helped put on another very successful season at the Wilmington Sea Dawgs.  As Director of Communications for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs, I have seen a lot of different interns come through these doors, and I have seen them leave through those very same doors.  Sometimes they show up, they do their best to help, and then part ways after the season is complete.  And sometimes, they show up, invest their mind, their heart, and their soul into making this a better organization.  And when they leave those doors, the working world becomes a better place.

The title intern is not a glorious title.  It is an unpaid, unscripted, and at times unnoticed position for most organizations and corporations.  You can work as much as possible, or you can do what is necessary to get by.  But every year, there is always an intern who goes above and beyond what is asked to get the job done right.

We as an organization strive to bring a high quality basketball product to the citizens of the Wilmington community for an affordable price.  We display the qualities that make a business run effectively, and we like our interns to do the same.  To make the season a success every year, we rely on interns to handle many of the game day operations, as well as some of the day to day, behind the scenes operations.  Interns have the option to put in as much work as they want.  They also have the option to learn as much as they want.  It is this system that enables at least one intern to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

We are very thankful to have interns from both Cape Fear Community College and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.  We believe that our organization can be very beneficial to people in the Communication and Sports Management fields.  Every intern has the opportunity to meet people that work in their future fields, or develop workplace skills that will benefit them down the road in their career field.  It truly is a chance to shine.

This years winner of the Intern of the Year award proved to be that special person we were looking for.  They showed up early, and stayed late.  Asked questions, answered questions, and listened when listening was important.  They made us laugh, and they made us think.  They also did a great amount of work for us.  Our intern of the year was our sportswriter, our media coordinator, our marketing specialist, our back-up team manager, and now, our friend as well.  It is without further adieu that I am extremely honored to give the 2009 Intern of the Year award to, John Smith!
