Retinal Variables
Data visualization
is the study and practice of the visual representation of data, defined as information which has been abstracted in some schematic form, including attributes or variables for the units of information (Friendly, 2009). Recent research suggests that data visualization may be an appropriate vehicle to teach complex mathematics concepts in the K-12 classroom (Rubin, 2005). Further, data visualization can also be linked to the updated National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S), which emphasize the use digital media and environments to communicate complex information.

This website contains nine data visualization exercises designed to 1) introduce measurement and data analysis concepts and 2) to help individuals master vital information technology skills. All students should start with the first exercise, and after completion, complete the following exercise until all exercises have been finished. The final data visualization exercise is a contest in which the data display will be judged by experts to determine a winner. The winners of the contest will each recieve $50 gift cards to GameSpot. This project is sponsored by the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Watson School of Education.
