ANT 105 004
September 17, 2009
Form groups of no more than 8 people. Put everyone’s name on 1 piece of paper for the group. Discuss the following questions in your group, and answer them on the piece of paper.
1) Do you think an ethnographer should or shouldn’t reveal him or herself as an anthropologist to the people being studied? Why or why not?
2) What is the four-field approach, in what geographic region is it most important and widespread, and why is it an effective approach to anthropology? Give examples.
3) What is the standard kinship and marriage pattern in our culture? What kinship terminology do we use? How does this kinship and marriage pattern help us adapt to the cultural, economic, and physical environment around us? Or doesn’t it? Try to use at least a little bit of the etic perspective.
